fROM THE FUTURES
Prototyping Futures to Understand our Present
VIRTUAL EVENT | COMMUNITY BUILDING
From the Futures was a unicorn, an island in the sky, a unique space of creativity and collective support at a time where it felt like our societies were crumbling under the waves of the pandemic.
Created at the peak of the 2020 lockdown, From The Futures was a virtual community dedicated to the exploration of better futures in a time of extreme change. The initiative aimed a taking back control of our lives through virtual experimentation and shared learning.
From the Futures used innovative creative methods such as speculative design to imagine different possible futures at a time where our collective destinty felt so instable. The group embraced video meeting platforms (Zoom, etc) as a new medium for collective action, experimenting with the capabilities of those new tools to organize creative workshops, group performances and virtual exhibitions.
The initiative was developed in partnership with Columbia University’s Digital Storytelling lab in order to organize cultural events at a time where many were stuck at home. The collective grew a unique community through a series of 12 fully virtual events, held between April and August 2020 and gathering a total 1,200 artists, creators and participants around themes such as the futures of public spaces, food, art and artificial intelligence.
